Wrestler received Viagra from clinic at heart of probe

July 11, 2007

ALBANY — A pro wrestler who hanged himself after strangling his wife and suffocating his 7-year-old son in their Georgia home received a single order of Viagra from a South Florida wellness clinic that was targeted in an Albany-based steroids investigation, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

Capital Imaging Healthcare Associates
Viagra, a prescription drug, is used to increase sexual potency in men and is not a steroid or performance-enhancing drug. The prescription for pro wrestler Christopher M. Benoit Sr., 40, was filled last July by Signature Compounding Pharmacy in Orlando and mailed to him at an address in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., officials in the case said.

Benoit’s prescription for Viagra was processed by MedXLife, a Florida wellness clinic whose operators pleaded guilty to prescription drug charges in Albany County on April 25.

On Tuesday, sources familiar with the Albany investigation misstated that MedXLife had also shipped two other prescription drug orders to Benoit, one to a Texas hotel in late 2005 and another to his former home outside Atlanta.

Now more details are emerging, and officials in the Albany investigation confirmed Wednesday that shipping records show the two other prescription drug orders sent to Benoit were processed by Infinity Longevity, a Boca Raton, Fla., wellness clinic whose owners have not been charged in connection with the steroids investigation.

Investigators said they are trying to determine what type of prescription drugs Benoit allegedly received from Infinity Longevity, which steered business to Signature pharmacy, according to wiretaps in the case.

Infinity Longevity is owned by Anthony Forgione, a former Boca Raton police officer who was fired in April 2003 for allegedly using anabolic steroids, according to Florida State Department records and a story published in the Palm Beach Post that year.

Officials in the Albany case said they are sharing information with Georgia authorities, who are trying to determine whether steroids or other drugs played a role in last weekend’s murder-suicide.

Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard, the Georgia prosecutor steering the Benoit investigation, said authorities discovered needle marks on the arm of Benoit’s son and believe the couple, or Benoit alone, may have been injecting the boy with human growth hormone because they believed he was undersized, according to published reports.

Infinity Longevity is one of several so-called “wellness clinics'’ that authorities say funneled prescriptions for steroids and other drugs to Signature pharmacy.

Sealed wiretaps in the steroids investigation, which were reviewed by the Times Union in March, showed at least one instance last year in which law enforcement officials were listening in on Signature’s telephone calls when there was an exchange involving Infinity Longevity.

A transcript of that call recounted a man calling Signature pharmacy and saying he was ready to make a purchase after finding their Web site on the Internet.

Tony Palladino, a corporate account manager at Signature, fielded the call and explained to the man that they only filled prescriptions. He advised the caller to contact Infinity Longevity.

You’ve got mail - all you need is a way to get rid of it

July 9, 2007

You can’, my mother used to say, ‘have too much of a good thing’. Since she was generally not in favour of good things (which she equated with self-indulgence), I habitually disregarded this advice. But I am now beginning to wonder if she may have been right after all. This thought is sparked by an inspection of my email system. I have 852 messages in my ‘office’ inbox. Correction, make that 854: two more came in while I was typing that last sentence. My personal inbox has 1,304 messages. My spam-blocking service tells me that, in the past 30 days, I received no fewer than 3,920 invitations to: enhance my, er, physique; invest in dodgy shares; send money to the deserving widows of Nigerian dictators; and purchase Viagra. I am - literally - drowning in email.

And I am not alone. Everyone I know is feeling the same. In the New York Times the other day, Nora Ephron, the novelist and screenwriter (and the director of You’ve Got Mail), wrote a witty piece on ‘The Six Ages of Email’. They are: infatuation, clarification, confusion, disenchantment, accommodation and death. I particularly like her description of the ‘clarification’ phase. ‘It takes five seconds to accomplish in an email message something that takes five minutes on the telephone. The phone requires you to converse, to say things like hello and goodbye, to pretend to some semblance of interest in the person on the other end of the line. Worst of all, the phone occasionally forces you to make actual plans with the people you talk to - even if you have no desire whatsoever to see them. No danger of that with email.’

If I took it seriously, I could spend all day dealing with my email and never do any actual work. Which is why, increasingly, I tend to ignore my inboxes. This may seem discourteous, but in fact it isn’t - because much of ‘my’ email isn’t actually aimed primarily at me at all. I am just one of the people who is cc’d on the correspondence. In other words, people who are communicating with one another have added me as a kind of bystander. Their motives for doing this are varied. In some cases they are doing me a courtesy, or trying to persuade me that they’re not doing things behind my back. (Little do they know that I couldn’t care less.) In other cases, they are simply being lazy or covering their arses in case anything goes wrong, at which point they will say that I was ‘kept in the loop’ and accordingly must share some of the blame.

The problem is not with email as such, but with the way organisations have subverted - or perverted - it for bureaucratic purposes. And they have done it for the same reason that spammers have perverted personal email: because it’s cheap and easy to do. In the old days, big organisations had massive internal mail systems, with post-rooms and messengers lugging bags or trolleys of paper. Email offered a way of dispensing with all this bother and expense. So organisations began to deluge employees with electronic documents. And the flood of email rapidly became the torrent that paralyses us today. Email has morphed from a communication channel into a means of bureaucratic control.

It can’t go on like this. Already some of the more alert businesses have realised that email has become a dysfunctional technology. They are instituting rules like a daily limit on the amount of time spent dealing with it. Or stipulating that email can only be done at the beginning and end of the working day. One organisation requires employees to don a red baseball cap when they are emailing, so that managers patrolling their open-plan offices can spot the addicts. I hear that one CEO of a US hi-tech firm has opened up his inbox so everyone can read it - with a corresponding reduction in sycophantic and attachment-laden messages.

Other solutions will doubtless emerge. In the meantime, here are some suggestions for refuseniks. First, change your own behaviour: always ask ‘is this email really necessary?’ before sending it. Never, ever send an email to a colleague in the next office. Set up a filter to block every message on which you are cc’d: deal only with messages addressed directly to you. Get yourself a private email address which is only known to your nearest and dearest.

Don’t get hot and bothered about summer plans, bills

July 2, 2007

Who’s ready to make this the Best. Summer. Ever?

You, over there with the sweat pouring off your forehead?

How about you, the one waving the utility bill that reads “$657.83″ in the little box?
advertisement

So summer can present challenges. But with a little help, they’re surmountable. Here’s a guide to making summer swell.

Improve gas mileage

There is little you can do about high gasoline prices. But Aaron Gold, the car guide at www.about.com, has suggestions to improve mileage while you’re reconsidering that purchase of a Hummer and pricing electric-gas hybrids.

Keeping your tires properly inflated and using a clean air filter are basic strategies.

Washing your car, particularly its underbody, can make a difference in its longevity. While you’re tidying up, empty the inside of the car, too. Many people let odds and ends pile up. It doesn’t take much to acquire an extra 50 pounds of junk in the trunk, and the more weight a car hauls, the more gas it uses.

New wheels and tires can improve handling and may look cool. But if they’re wider than the stock tires, chances are good they create more resistance and decrease fuel economy.

Prepare kids for camp

Susan Inglese, co-founder of the Web site www.fun campstuff.com, says getting the most out of camp requires planning and the girding of emotions. Fortunately, being organized will keep parents and kids so busy there may not be much separation anxiety.

Packing properly is essential. Include pre-addressed, stamped envelopes, an address book, stickers, stationery (both personalized and not - kids like to trade), a family photo and an item that can be autographed by bunk buddies. Autograph pillows are popular.

Pack with your child, so he or she knows where everything is.

Drugs Online - Buy Drugs Online at reasanoble prices.DrugOnline.cc provides confortable and easy way to order drugs online including drugs free shipping.

“When I sent my child the first year,” Inglese says, “halfway through the camp season I hadn’t received any letters. That was because she couldn’t find the stamps.”

Inglese likes to secretly pack a small gift her child will find later or mail one ahead of time to camp. Sending your kid on overnight stays with grandparents or neighbors during the weeks leading up to camp is another good idea. That way, he or she is used to waking up without you around.

Send several little bottles of soap, shampoo and other toiletries rather than a large one of each. They’re easier to carry, and if one gets lost, your kid still will have more.

Find a water bottle with a wide mouth. It’s easier to pack ice into one. Send anything that glows in the dark. That’s always a big hit when it’s lights out.

If phone calls are allowed at camp, schedule them early in the day. That way, campers will hang up and run off to other activities, rather than head to bed with nothing to think about but being homesick.

When your child comes home, unpack his or her trunk outside.

“You never know what you might find in there,” Inglese says. “You can find bugs and ants and dirt and sand. You really don’t want to bring that into your house.”

Taking Social Networking Offline

June 25, 2007

At first, the Web didn’t look too promising an avenue for meeting new people, since the only ones who ever seem to contact me through my page on MySpace are spammers selling Viagra. Then a friend told me about MeetIn.org, an online social network designed to help people find new friends — not the romantic kind — to do fun stuff with in the real world.

HP Multifunction Printers – The Reliable Workhorses for Business – are built on the legendary LaserJet printer technology, delivering exceptional print quality, performance and reliability. Trade in your old desktop printer today to receive up to $500 back by mail www.hp.com/go/considerhpmfp.

I started using MeetIn.org two months ago, having found myself a social butterfly with its wings clipped. My best friend had bought her first home and was busy caulking the bathtub and painting walls. Another buddy was getting ready for her first baby. Yet another was working two jobs. After spending one more Sunday weeding my yard, it dawned on me that I needed to find more friends to join me for hikes and concerts.

However, making new friends is not easy, even in Portland, Ore., a superfriendly city. I am too shy to initiate conversations with strangers at my favorite bookstore, the gym or lectures. At first, the Web didn’t look too promising, since the only new people who ever seem to contact me through my page on MySpace Latest News about MySpace are spammers selling Viagra. Apparently I’m not alone in my quest for offline friendships. Social networking sites that attempt to go beyond the conventional, online-only services offered by the likes of MySpace and Evite have been enjoying stellar growth. MeetIn’s user base has nearly doubled, vs. a year ago, to 75,000 people in 90 cities worldwide. Other sites focused on getting people together offline report strong growth as well. Launched five months ago, nightclub-oriented MingleNow.com already boasts 1 million users.

With MeetIn you set up a profile, which can include your photo, age and brief sections on education and interests (MeetIn’s largest and most active chapter is in Portland, where more than 6,600 people have created profiles). Each member can post invites to events — dinners, concerts, salsa dancing, Frisbee outings — for others to join. The Portland contingent posts about 150 events a month. Promotional and singles events are a no-no. “I was very, very nervous and apprehensive,” remembers Joanne Couchman, who came to her first MeetIn event in 2005, after she and her boyfriend relocated to Portland from the East Coast. “But I walked in and these people made me feel like I’ve known them forever.”

The similarly named MeetUp.com, which helps people find events ranging from scrapbooking to lectures on social justice, has seen the number of RSVPs on its site double in the past five months. To keep up with the growth, MeetUp plans to double its staff this year to 60 people, says Scott Heiferman, cofounder of the site. “We are growing faster than ever.”

Impotence Indicates Risk Of Heart Disease

June 21, 2007

Many people who suffer a heart attack had never had any symptoms of heart disease. Of the roughly 5,000 individuals who die of sudden cardiac arrest in Sweden each year, two thirds had not had any known heart disease. But in men there is one thing that should constitute a advance sign of coming heart problems: impotence.

In some cases, impotence can have neurological, psychiatric, and other causes. But the most common cause, accounting for up to four cases of five, is that the blood circulation in the penis has become so poor that erection is impaired, or no erection can occur at all. And if the circulation in these vessels has been affected by atherosclerosis, then it is highly probable that the same process is under way in the coronary artery in the heart.

In a dissertation from Lund University in Sweden, the physician Rasmus Borgquist has managed to show that this reasoning is correct.

“One of our studies shows that otherwise healthy men with impotence show signs of early atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries of the heart. In another study we saw that men with impotence evince a higher incidence of high blood pressure, high blood fat, abdominal fat, and other traditional risk factors for heart disease,” he says.

Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online.

The conclusion is that men with impotence problems should seek care as soon as possible, since both their impotence and the possible threat of heart disorders can be counteracted with early intervention. The first priority involves changes in life style, such as quitting smoking, exercise, and altered diet, and then, if these are insufficient, ¬medication for lowering blood pressure and blood fat and also pharmacological therapy for treatment of the impotence as such.

“It’s probably easier to get men to accept changes in their life style if you can point out that they alleviate impotence, rather than talking about the risk of a heart attack sometime down the road. And there are studies that show that potency improves rather quickly in those who quit smoking and lose weight,” says Rasmus Borgquist.

The notion that there is a connection between impotence and heart disease was put forward in the mid 1980s. But this connection has been studied seriously only in recent years.

“Today there is a greater interest in these issues, both among the public and at drug companies,” claims Rasmus Borgquist. “On the one hand, several new drugs have appeared to combat cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors, and, on the other hand, potency drugs like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra have led many more men to seek help for impotence.”

There is still a certain “awkwardness factor” that makes some patients reluctant to seek help, and some physicians are hesitant to take up the matter. But in Rasmus Borgquist’s experience, once the physician has broached the subject, patients tend to respond frankly.

New guidelines recommend Viagra, sildenafil for pulmonary hypertension

June 13, 2007

A recently issued update to the 2004 American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Guidelines recommends the use of sildenafil in treating patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), reporting a substantial benefit.

Drugs Online - Buy Drugs Online at reasanoble prices.DrugOnline.cc provides confortable and easy way to order drugs online including drugs free shipping.

The drug, most commonly known as Viagra, is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction.

The recommendation is based on several reports of studies of patients with PAH who were successfully treated with long-term sildenafil therapy. In one case, 222 patients completing 1-year of treatment with sildenafil monotherapy improved their 6-minute walk test by 51m.

This update appears in the June issue of CHEST, the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians.

HIS HEALTH: What does a diagnosis of prostate cancer mean? (Pt II) - The surgical option

June 6, 2007

Regarding ability to permanently cure the condition, given early cancer, radical prostatectomy in which the prostate gland and seminal vesicles are completely removed, has the longest track record of durability of cure but is very invasive (although laparoscopic or keyhole surgery has minimised this aspect of treatment thereby shortening the period of convalescence).

With open radical prostatectomy, an average hospital stay of three to six days can be expected and convalescence at home, before return to major activities, is approximately six weeks. The catheter placed at surgery to drain the bladder while the joining between the urine passage and bladder heals can be expected to remain for five days to three weeks depending on the surgeon’s preference and the method of rejoining used.

Common side effects (greater than five per cent) include minor urine leakage that is usually short lived (the operation inherently involves completely removing one of the two muscles which control the urine and shortening the remaining one) and erectile dysfunction. The risk of the latter is related to the patient’s age (the younger the better), pre-surgery erectile function (the better it is before, the better it is after) and whether the nerves that transmit erectile impulses to the penis are spared. In reality, a nerve-sparing operation is usually performed unless otherwise contraindicated but despite this, nerve conduction may be impaired after the surgery for different reasons and full nerve recovery may take up to 18 months.

Inject the penis

There is no advantage of laparoscopic prostatectomy (robot assisted or not) where post-operative urinary control and erectile function are concerned. During this period oral agents such as Viagra, Levitra or Cialis may speed return of erectile activity and for intercourse, the patient can be taught to inject a drug directly into the penis which gives firm erections.

Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online.

A patient can expect to have a dry orgasm after surgery and perhaps som orgasmic sensation. He can also expect to be infertile and this is especially important to know when the man diagnosed with prostate cancer has not yet started a family. It would be prudent for him to impregnate his wife prior to treatment (prostate cancer cannot be sexually transmitted, a frequently asked question by concerned female partners) rather than undergo expensive and invasive assisted conception techniques after the surgery.

Complications of surgery include total loss of urinary control, a stricture or narrowing of the joining between the urine passage and the bladder; clots forming in the limb or pelvic veins which may travel to the lungs and cause death - this dreaded complication is minimised by early mobilisation after surgery, chemically ‘thinning’ the blood and applying mechanical devices to the legs to keep the blood in the calves flowing during and immediately after surgery.

Heavy blood loss during surgery is sometimes encountered but, once controlled, the patient’s own blood (taken off prior to surgery) is returned to him close to the end of the procedure. This preoperative ’self-donation’ of blood significantly reduces the risks associated with blood donated by someone else.

What can a patient do prior to surgery to optimise the outcome? Lose weight if overweight, stop smoking, stop taking aspirin tablets or herbal supplements 10 days prior to surgery, see an internist to help optimise preoperative health, and learn to do pelvic floor muscle (Kegel’s) exercises preferably with the aid of a physiotherapist.

Aussie Viagra-fed oysters arouse international interest

June 5, 2007

SYDNEY (AFP) - George May said the natural qualities of the oyster, known for arousing sexual desire, combined with the best modern pharmaceutical equivalent to create a potentially multi-million dollar market.

“First of all, oysters are the greatest natural aphrodisiac, second, you lace it with Viagra, and third, it’s a laugh,” the 59-year-old told AFP on Monday.

May, who was a successful Sydney marketing executive until being diagnosed with prostate cancer late in 2006, will not be allowed to sell his oysters in Australia because they contravene strict regulations.

And he has been ordered by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, which produces the anti-impotence drug Viagra, to stop using the name of their most famous product in his marketing.

But May says neither of these obstacles will stop him from exporting his specially prepared Sydney Rock Oysters around the world.

“No-one can stop me feeding Viagra to my oysters. The reason that Pfizer are jumping up and down is that I used the name Viagra,” he said.

“I’m getting calls from Macau, Hong Kong, Moscow for god’s sake. I’m getting calls from all over the bloody world.”

Drugs Online - Buy Drugs Online at reasanoble prices.DrugOnline.cc provides confortable and easy way to order drugs online including drugs free shipping.

May, a self-described “marketing genius” from Scotland, said the idea came to him after he started “hanging around with the boys” in the small fishing village north of Sydney he retired to following prostate surgery last December.

His doctor had prescribed a small daily dose of Viagra to help his recovery and it occurred to him he should be feeding the drug to oysters to help the local farmers, many of whom had struggled after a disease swept through their crops.

May said he told them: “I’m going to feed them Viagra and zinc and every other aphrodisiac I can find.”

He has since patented the idea of feeding the oysters Viagra, magnesium, zinc and sea grass among other things after the shellfish have gone through the normal purification process.

“They are all being really well looked after because they are in beautiful filtered water and we’re actually feeding them vitamins and minerals,” May said. “We’re getting a bigger oyster.”

May now has some 10 million oysters in cultivation and says he eats one to two dozen each day without any ill effects of consuming a foodstuff containing some medication. “I swear to god. They work,” he said.

A spokesman for Pfizer said the drug company was concerned about the use of their brand name. “It’s a very ordinary trademark issue,” he said.

Internet trader sold Viagra behind bars

May 31, 2007

A SALESMAN jailed for illegally selling drugs, including Viagra, over the internet is still running his business from behind bars.

Martin Hickman was sentenced to three months and fined £20,000 for contempt of court earlier this month. He had failed to abide by a previous High Court injunction ordering him to stop selling Viagra.

Hickman, from Ashton, was the first retailer in Britain to be jailed after a civil action by the government body, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

But within days of him going to jail, his company’s website was still selling the impotance drug Kamagra, a generic and cheaper version of Viagra.

Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online.

Experts say that if the drugs are taken without an initial assessment by a GP, users run the risk of suffering serious side effects, including potentially fatal heart attack.

Hickman’s website also offers a wide-range of ‘erectile dysfunction’ medication and boasts no prescription, consultation or administration charges.

A test purchase was made by the MHRA and Hickman was warned on several occasions he was breaking the law and that he should stop advertising certain medicines for sale. He was issued with a High Court injunction last September. Investigators believe Hickman had several websites, including one hosted in Germany. Hickman was jailed on 7 May and his company MSH Traders fined £20,000 after he was found to be in contempt of court for failing to observe the High Court injunction.

Cement mixer used to make fake Viagra

May 29, 2007

KUALA LUMPUR: Imagine taking painkillers to dull the pain but ending up with kidney failure or consuming Viagra and ending up with the urge to dance all night long.
Pfizer Inc, which produces Viagra, has expressed concern about the booming trade in counterfeit medicines in the Asia-Pacific region.

Its global security senior regional director, Donald Shruhan, said 3.5 million counterfeit Viagra tablets were seized in 2005, a seven-fold increase from 500,000 in 2003.

“Tests on counterfeit Ponstan tablets revealed that although it looks similar to the original, the imitation contains boric acid, which can cause kidney failure and even death. A fake Viagra pill was found to contain the same ingredients as Ecstasy,” he added.

Those who consume counterfeit drugs are at risk because it will be ineffective, are produced in unhygienic conditions and have not been tested or approved.
“The counterfeit pharmaceutical products that consumers purchase may also contain toxic or unlisted ingredients, which may prove detrimental to their health.”

In Egypt, a cement mixer was used to mix several different ingredients to make fake Viagra tablets.

“Counterfeiters are more concerned with the appearance of their product rather than the efficacy,” Shruhan said.

Drugs Online - Buy Drugs Online at reasanoble prices.DrugOnline.cc provides confortable and easy way to order drugs online including drugs free shipping.

Studies have shown that counterfeit medicines account for nearly 10 per cent or US$22 billion (RM74.8 billion) of the global supply of medicine.
